Hair fall is a major problem that affects both men and women at some point in their lives. There are many causes of hair fall. The most common factor is androgenetic alopecia. The cause of androgenetic alopecia is hereditary and there is usually a genetic history of it, up to three generations, on either the mother's or the father's side.

The treatment options that have a definite role in the treatment of androgenetic alopecia are broadly divided into two. The first option is medical treatment and the second option is surgical hair transplant. Medically, there are only two medicines, namely Minoxidil lotion and oral finasteride tablets, that have a testified role in treating hair fall. Medicines work only in the early stages of balding.

They may stop the hair fall and retain the hair that are present. But these medical treatments have some disadvantages also, such as they need to be taken regularly, they have to be used lifelong, and they cannot help a bald person grow a head full of hair. When the balding has progressed to stage 4 and beyond the "gold standard" for hair restoration the solution is hair.

Hair transplant is done by two techniques world over.

Who are candidates for hair transplant ?

Any person who has developed baldness, can go for a hair restoration procedure provided there is no active skin disease on the balding area and there is no chronic medical illness . It is most commonly performed for male pattern baldness which is genetically determined and starts developing around 30 year of age. Hair transplant can also be done in females.

Is hair restoration permanent ?

The hairs at back are immune to genetic and hormonal effect of the body. As the same hairs are transplanted in the balding area, it continues to grow throughout the life.

When will transplanted hairs start growing?

Follicular units will restore its blood supply in 2 weeks. The hair shaft will fall off leaving follicular unit intact in the scalp and then they go into dormant stage. Hairs will restart their growth after 3-4 months.

Is there any medical treatment for hair restoration ?

Most of the baldness pattern is genetically determined, so it difficult to restore hair by medical treatment only. It is helpful in cases where baldness is due to hormonal changes, deficiency of certain elements in the diet, exiting skin disease or persistent anxiety. Some kind of medical treatment may be recommended for rapid growth of good quality hairs after hair transplant.

Post procedural care.

After the procedure there is a dressing over the head which is removed on 4th day. A person can start his daily activity by the evening and can go outside with a head cap.Smoking should be avoided. He/she can take shower on 4th day onward.

Are there any complications ?

There is no specific complication related to hair transplant. Temporary altered sensation at the operated area and swelling over upper face may be noted in some person.
